The Winners of the 2014 Lauderhill College Essay Scholarships

At April 28th Commission Meeting, checks will be presented to the winners of the 2014 Lauderhill College Essay Scholarship.  Lauderhill residents which are Seniors in High School going on to College or Vocational School applied by answer two 500 word essays:

  1. What would be the best way to end bullying in school?
  2. Describe your favorite fictional literary character and what draws you to that character.
Funding for this program was provided by Florida Medical Center and Prestige Auto Wash.

Bike Lane on NW 19th Street From SR 7 to Powerline

1.       The scope of the project will be milling 1” and resurface 1” on the exiting roadway. Restripe the road to 10’ travel lane and 4’ bike lane on both side of the road.

1.       The project is scheduled to be advertised for design in May 2014 and the design contract is scheduled to be executed in November 2014.  Based on the Work Program  the budget for design phase 32 is $850,000.00 and the budget for construction phase 52 is $5,503,916.00.

Notes of the Commission Meeting of March 10

On March 10, the City Commission held its Regular Commission Meeting, and the following are notes of interest (all items passed unanimously unless otherwise indicated).  NOTE:  Commissioner Benson was absent due to traveling on city business.

ORDINANCES & PUBLIC HEARINGS - THIRD READING

ORDINANCE NO. 14O-02-105:  CREATING SUBSECTION 3.1.15., RESIDENTIAL MULTIPLE-FAMILY AT 40 DWELLING UNITS PER GROSS ACRE (RM-40) ZONING DISTRICT;  CREATING PARAGRAPH 3.1.15.D., SPECIAL EXCEPTION USES AND STRUCTURES AMENDING SCHEDULE B., ALLOWABLE USES, SECTION 1., USES ALLOWED IN RESIDENTIAL DISTRICTS, BY ADDING THE PERMITTED, ACCESSORY, AND SPECIAL EXCEPTION USES AND STRUCTURES ALLOWED HEREIN IN ORDER TO ENSURE INTERNAL CONSISTENCY; AMENDING SCHEDULE P., DESIGN STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES, SECTION 2., GENERAL DESIGN STANDARDS, TO ADD ANY DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENTS WITHIN THE RM-40 ZONING DISTRICT.  This was amended to now require that all residential development in the newly created RM-40 Zones must apply for a Special Exception in addition to other previously approved requirements.  Because of the amendment, a Fourth Reading will be required.

RESOLUTION NO. 14R-03-50:   APPROVING THE DESIGN-BUILD AGREEMENT WITH WEST CONSTRUCTION, INC. FOR THE DESIGN-BUILD SERVICES OF FIRE STATION 110 LOCATED AT 3120 NORTHWEST 12TH PLACE; PROVIDING FOR PAYMENT IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $3,687,195.00. PROVIDING FOR PAYMENT FROM BUDGET CODE NUMBER 305-351-6207.

RESOLUTION NO. 14R-03-52:   AUTHORIZING A CHANGE ORDER IN THE AMOUNT OF $132,219.00 FOR THE INCREASED FUNDING NECESSARY TO PAY FOR ADDITIONAL IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE LAUDERHILL PERFORMING ARTS CENTER AND LIBRARY NECESSARY INCLUDING ADDITIONAL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE HIGH VOLUME AIR CONDITIONING UNITS TO MAKE THEM LEED COMPLAINT AND FOR THE INCREASED COST OF THE LIGHTING TO MEET LEED CERTIFICATION; PROVIDING THAT THESE INCREASED COSTS ARE DUE TO UNFORESEEN COSTS; PROVIDING FOR PAYMENT FROM BUDGET CODE NUMBER 460-912-06230.

RESOLUTION NO. 14R-03-53:   APPROVING AND RATIFYING THE MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE CITY OF LAUDERHILL AND THE FLORIDA STATE LODGE, FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE REGARDING THE BANKED NUMBER OF VACATION DAYS; PROVIDING FOR TERMS AND CONDITIONS; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE THE MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING.

Free Disposal of Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics

HHWThe City of Lauderhill offers free disposal of household hazardous waste and electronics for free. This is a convenient and environmentally sound way to safely dispose of items such as an old TV, computer, keyboard or monitor, batteries, chemicals, paint or aerosol products and more. Just provide two proof of residency such as a photo ID with current address and a utility bill.

Notes of the Commission Meeting of February 24

On February 24, the City Commission held its regular meeting, and the following are notes of interests (all items passed unanimously unless otherwise indicated):

ORDINANCES & PUBLIC HEARINGS - SECOND READING

ORDINANCE NO. 14O-02-105:   AMENDING THE LAND DEVELOPMENT REGULATIONS, CREATING SUBSECTION 3.1.15., RESIDENTIAL MULTIPLE-FAMILY AT 40 DWELLING UNITS PER GROSS ACRE (RM-40) ZONING DISTRICT.  This would apply to the old McArthur Dairy site.  At second reading, an amendment offered by Mayor Kaplan were passed to now require a special exception requirement to utilize this new zoning.  Because of this amendment, a third reading of the Ordinance is required.  Also, the Commission would review and approve the site plan submitted in this particular case.

ORDINANCE NO. 14O-02-108: CREATING SECTION 12-185, SALE OR DISTRIBUTION OF NICOTINE VAPORIZERS OR LIQUID NICOTINE TO PROHIBIT THE SALE OR DISTRIBUTION TO MINORS AND TO PROHIBIT THE SALE IN VENDING MACHINES;  (REQUESTED BY VICE MAYOR M. MARGARET BATES.

RESOLUTION NO. 14R-02-44:   APPROVING THE CREATION OF A NEW JOB POSITION OF MUSEUM CURATOR.

RESOLUTION NO. 14R-02-45:  OPPOSING OUTDOOR FIREARM RANGES IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS; URGING THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO AMEND FLORIDA STATUTE, SECTION 790.15 TO AT LEAST IMPOSE REASONABLE RESTRICTIONS AND LIMITATIONS ON OUTDOOR FIREARM RANGES IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS AND ON THE DISCHARGES OF FIREARMS IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS, SUCH AS DISTANCE SEPARATION REQUIREMENTS, ETC,; (REQUESTED BY COMMISSIONER HAYWARD J. Lauderhill Fitness Walking Program - FREE

Walkers MUST complete paperwork and waivers at the time of registration.
Walkers MUST record their walking while in a Lauderhill park with pedometer or small phone walking apps.
Walkers MUST check in with a Lauderhill Recreation staff person weekly to show the mileage app before and after walking in the Lauderhill Park.  Only mileage gained while walking or exercising in a Lauderhill Park will be recorded.  Walkers cannot "call in" their mileage.

Incentive prizes:

100 miles - T Shirt
300 miles - single fitness class pass
500 miles - one round of golf or two single fitness class passes or two non-residents weight room guest passes
750 miles - one round for a foursome of golf or one month of fitness classes
1000 miles - one small room/pavilion rental (not including the deposit) or two months of fitness classes or two rounds for a foursome of golf

Lifeguard - American Red Cross Training

Lifeguard Training Classes at Veterans Park and the Aquatics Center in John E Mullin Park Pools.

Prerequisites:

     *  On-line portion of the course must be completed at least two days prior to your classroom skills session, which is scheduled for Monday, March 17 and Saturday, March 22.
     *  Student must be able to swim a consistent 300 meters
     *  Must be 15 years or older
